Nintendo Switch Sports

Nintendo Switch Sports is the latest version of the sports games that date back to Wii Sports. It brings the classic motion sports game up to date with new sports and ways to play. You can compete in six sports, including Tennis, Volleyball, Golf, Football and Bowling. The novelty, as ever, is that you use real-world motions to control your play and the Joy-Con controller offers accurate one-to-one control for surprising nuance and precision.

The game sees the classic events from Wii-Sports returning:

  • Tennis: rally by gently swinging the Joy-Con controller at the right time.

  • Bowling: roll the ball straight ahead, or give it a little curve.

  • Sword Fight: Knock your opponent off the platform while attacking and defending.

  • Golf: Use the Joy-Con to control your swing in this classic motion-controlled version of the game.

  • Basketball: Compete with friends and family in a rapid-fire Three-Point Challenge, or online in two-on-two matches.

There are also new sports that extend the experience:
  • Football: Use a gigantic ball to make dynamic plays in a game that looks much like Rocket League. You use the Joy-Con motion to shoot and perform headers. You can also attach a Joy-Con controller to the Leg Strap to employ intuitive kicking motions.

  • Badminton: Control your shots left and right while keeping the shuttlecock in the air. Swing left and right while keeping the shuttlecock in the air. Perform powerful smash shots to gain the upper hand!

You can compete online in Switch Sports. Play together in the same room or online with family and friends, or challenge players around the world. You can create your own Mii character and then customise your appearance with items collected from playing online. There are even Pro Leagues where you can try to increase your rank by winning in different sports.

Insights to ensure your child's gaming experience remains safe and enjoyable

Internet Matters Recommends

Healthy competition

These games often involve competition, either against AI opponents or other players. This can be enjoyable and promote healthy competition. However, sometimes it can lead to frustration and anger, which might be a sign to take a break. Talk to your child about recognising these feelings and taking breaks when the game is no longer fun.

Improve sports skills

Video games based on sport can help children develop an interest and greater understanding of rules within the sport. Explore the sport outside of the video game to support their interests and develop their skills.

Balance with Other Activities

Children often play sport video games because of interest in the sport itself. Balance their gaming time with playing the real sport together.

Although to compete well you need precise control and good reactions, even very young players can enjoy taking part in the sporting fun.
